At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.
A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
